A sudden Titan attack prompts massive evacuation efforts-but not everyone makes it to safety before the devastation ensues. Caught in the crossfire between battling monsters, many residents become trapped in the collapsing city—your only daughter among them! Despite its name, Survivor Instinct is not actually a survival game. Instead, it’s more of a traditional 2.5D metroidvania in which you must traverse nonlinear environments and return to previously-explored areas once you’ve acquired the tools necessary to unlock brand new routes. There is admittedly some resource management in that health can only be replenished via health kits and pistol ammo is limited and therefore must be used sparingly. However, make no mistake about it: Kong: Survivor Instinct is more about pushing forwards and advancing the storyline than scavenging for supplies and struggling to survive. My favorite aspect of the game is its aforementioned nonlinear level design. Whereas some metroidvanias can be daunting and even tedious to navigate due to the sheer size of their worlds (see: Hollow Knight), Survivor Instinct is a much gentler experience in that it constantly nudges you in the right direction and frequently loops you back around to previous areas rather than forcing you to backtrack long distances.
