Mouthwashing is a first-person horror game following the dying crew of a shipwrecked space freighter. Who could have known what good ol’ Captain Curly was capable of? Guess he thought his crew dying alongside him was only right. But some men can’t even kill themselves properly. Maimed, limbless and unable to speak, but alive, Curly is now at the mercy of the crew he has doomed to a slow death. I bought this game expecting a wacky cosmic horror with people turning into monsters after drinking mouthwash.What I got was a character drama exploring the horror of human depravity and narcissism. Because you don’t need cosmic horror mouthwash to have a person become a monster. Mouthwashing is disgusting, distressing, and infuriating in all the right ways. This is the proper traditional usage of science fiction writing, using the bleak backdrop like a stage to tell a story that could’ve worked regardless of the setting. In fact, this feels like a more graphic version of a Star Trek: TNG episode, albeit perhaps a few of them combined given the writing and concepts here. The story itself is more coherent than you’d expect but the quality of the writing and the way the story is told elevate it. All of the characters are well written and are fleshed out with backstories, needs, dreams, and desires by the end of the game.
