After letting his girlfriend down for the last time, Billy is swiftly dumped on his two-year anniversary. While moping home alone in the rain, a mysterious portal swallows Billy up and abandons him on a distant planet. The writing is somehow both silly and grounded, goofy and smart. BSTW pulls off a bit of a magic trick by reminding me of the games I loved from my childhood (the ones I feel like they don’t make anymore) while embracing fresh narratives and a play-how-you-want approach that offers surprising depth as either an RPG or a platformer. Regarding the latter, the game controls are really tight, which is crucial for a game like this (I can already picture speed-runners all over this game). Gameplay wise for the action sequences, it took me a bit of trial and error to initially get familiar with the gravity of the jumps. I relied on a slide/jump combo to make my way across treacherous gaps. Where the game shines is in its crazy storylines and adventure-style choice of dialogue and inventory management, similar to the Monkey Island series or Day of the Tentacle. I’ve only just branched off into open-world territory, so there’s plenty more for me to do, but I wanted to give my initial impressions. I’m definitely digging the style of art style, music, and comedy!
