Before Your Eyes is a first person narrative adventure which tells the story of a soul’s journey into the afterlife using a new and innovative form of interaction—your real-life blinks. The story begins after your death, aboard the ship of a mythical Ferryman tasked with shepherding souls to the afterlife. In order to help you pass on, he must first learn the story of your life. And so, he sends you back to relive your most important moments. Before Your Eyes is a story-driven indie game where blinking is an important gameplay element. Although you can play without a camera, it takes away some of the game’s charm and experience. Since I didn’t own a webcam, I turned my smartphone into one using special software. It’s a cute and simple game, with colorful, low-poly graphics, believable characters, and solid voice acting. The story it tells is very emotional, and you can make different decisions throughout the journey that alter certain scenes and dialogues, but it remains linear overall. The blinking mechanic allows you to interact with eye symbols to change scenes or progress the story when a metronome appears. It can be frustrating if you accidentally blink and miss dialogue or optional content. Some sections also require you to keep your eyes closed to focus on audio cues, like listening through doors.
