Livonia – The dense 163 km2 map lets players experience the hardcore survival hit in a whole new environment. Players can put their survival skills to the test by venturing into the unfamiliar land of Livonia, and seeing just how long they can last in this deadlier-than-ever world. Once you’ve learnt the in and outs of the game its very easy to play and you can completely loose yourself for hours, find some Youtube videos to get the basics and you’ll be a pro in no time. However the main premise of DayZ is the environment in which the player is placed upon entering a server: a huge realistic map with gritty yet convincing graphics filled with other players. And while the graphics are surely worth some praise for a somewhat dated game, the online aspect of DayZ is what turns realistic zombie survival into psychological horror. This game – if treated with due respect and not played like a looter shooter for 2 hours to then be dropped forever – makes you feel like a baby buck crawling through a dense forest infested with humans hunting you down. The reason for that, in my opinion, lies in the horrifying fear of the unknown caused by the presence of 80 other people on the same server with you. At NO point in the game can you be know what’s about to happen next, which means the only logical course of action is to be horrified by whatever MIGHT be out there and treating it as a deadly threat – also known as the dark forest paradigm.
