FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE is a bold reimagining of the original FINAL FANTASY VII, originally released in 1997, developed under the guidance of the original key developers. This critically-acclaimed game, which mixes traditional command-based combat and real-time action, makes its Steam debut along with FF7R EPISODE INTERmission─a new story arc featuring Yuffie Kisaragi. But seriously, this is a very pretty game with great music, as expected. I respect the big swing with the story and whether or not it pays off in the second and third game I don’t even care. But the combat…it’s trying to split the difference between an action game and the classic turn-based Final Fantasy game and the result is still subpar on both ends despite being the best attempt at this in a Final Fantasy game. My dodge isn’t even a dodge. It’s a roll with no i-frames. It’s only effective if I happen to roll out of range of an enemy, and if I get hit, ever, then I’m stunlocked for the entire combo, however long it may be. I’m clearly expected to swap party members often, which is fine, except doing so is jarring and flow-breaking and my other party members are often in weird and stupid places like out of range or not even in line of sight The summons? They may as well not have exist they’re such an afterthought, and it’s the same with the limit breaks. The stagger system? Like oh so many others it’s punishing instead of rewarding.
