I kind of get why they did it – you can pause the combat at any time to cast a spell, drink a potion, etc. and gain the upper hand. Melee combat isn’t the best – mash the attack, work up enough special ability then spam the special ability for extra damage then rinse and repeat – but at least the enemy monster designs are very good.
